Class Description:

The class will focus on the life giving element of water and how such a force can be used successfully in a realistic landscape painting.  Three aspects of water in the landscape will be the focus of the class; still water, gently moving water and the movement of a larger body of water such as a large lake or the ocean.

Each day will present a new subject.  The instructor will give step-by-step instructions and demonstrations on each aspect in this highly focused class.Elements of each will include achieving reflective surfaces, the steps to achieve the look of gently moving water, the aspect of capturing a wave and the motion of the sea.  This class will focus on small studies, not on finished works and will be held entirely in the studio.

All levels are encouraged

The participants will need to furnish their own easels.  A table easel can be used or any other portable, but sturdy, easel is great for indoor class work.  Handouts and photo references will be provided at class.

Suggested Supply List:

Paints:  (Please choose artist quality pigments)

Alizarin Crimson

Cad Red Medium

Cad Red Orange

Cad Yellow Medium or Hansa Yellow Dark

Cobalt Blue

Ultramarine Blue

Viridian or Phthalo Green

Titanium White or Flake White.  I would suggest staying away from Premalba White as the drying time is simply too long.

Underpainting White, Winsor and Newton-this is an extremely fast drying white which is great for building textures and is generally available from Jerry’s Artarama or other online art supply houses.  If you cannot get this, you might want to have some Titanium White in alkyd.  Again, fast drying, not as quick as Underpainting White.  The Winsor and Newton Underpainting White does have a strong odor.

Earth Tones:

Burnt Sienna

Yellow Ochre

Raw Umber

Ivory Black

Other colors at student's choice

Miscellaneous:

Odorless Mineral Spirits

Liquin or any other drying painting medium such as Japan Dryer or alkyd medium

Brushes, 10, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1.  I tend to use flats, but also have an assortment of rounds that I am using more and more.  I tend to use bristle brushes and move to sables or similar for finishing touches.

Palette or palette paper pad

Palette Knife, metal with two inch slightly flexible blade.  A plastic palette knife will not work for one of our exercises

Paper Towels

Bag for rubbish

Sketchbook, sketching pencils, eraser

Masking tape

Canvas:

3- 9 x 12 smooth, gesso masonite panels, I would also have an 8 x 10 or even a 12 x 16 for extra work as needed.  A smooth surface works best. You can also tape canvas (portrait smooth) to a board or other hard surface, which can then be mounted later.
